A Russian aristocrat, of theGalitzinfamily. He was an amateur musician, and is known particularly for his commissioning threestring quartets— opp. 127, 130 and 132 — fromLudwig van Beethoven, which are among the composer\'s group oflate string quartets.
His parents wereBoris Andreevich Galitzinand his wifeAna, and one of his sisters was the philanthropistTatiana Potemkina. He graduated from thepage corpsin 1810 and became an officer of the Russian Army (Kiev Dragoon Regiment), joining his father. He participated in 50 battles, including theBattle of Borodinoand the capture of Paris in original frame
