A striking matching set of Heinrich Heine’s Werke, comprising six substantial volumes in decorative red cloth bindings with gilt detailing and gilt page edges.
The set is heavily illustrated throughout, with numerous full-page illustrations, portraits, literary and historical scenes, ornamental compositions, decorative headings, illustrated section openings, and smaller illustrations incorporated into the text. The photographs show only a representative selection of the artwork found throughout the six volumes.
The contents encompass Heine’s poetry, prose, literary writings and other works. Among the material represented is Heine’s illustrated “Shakespeare’s Mädchen und Frauen” (Shakespeare’s Girls and Women), along with Romanzero and numerous other writings.
The volumes are believed to date from approximately 1890, consistent with the format, typography, illustration style and decorative bindings of late-19th-century editions. No definitive publication date was located within the volumes, so the date is stated as circa 1890 rather than as an exact year.
The set presents very attractively as a whole. The red bindings, gilt decoration, gilt page edges and exceptionally rich interior illustration give it considerable decorative presence in addition to its literary interest.
An appealing set for collectors of Heinrich Heine, German literature, illustrated Victorian-era books, decorative bindings, or antique multi-volume literary sets.
Six matching volumes as shown. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description and show the actual set being offered.
