1913 DELAG Passenger Zeppelin - Unposted Photo PostcardDESCRIPTIONVintage German postcard picturing the Zeppelin airship Sachsen (LZ 17) in low flight over open ground, with the ship\'s name lettered boldly along the hull and a crowd of onlookers gathered below to watch the crew car pass overhead.Sachsen entered service in May 1913 as one of the German Zeppelin company\'s DELAG passenger airships, carrying nearly 9,800 sightseeing passengers over 419 flights out of cities including Dresden, Leipzig, Hamburg, and Baden-Oos before the outbreak of World War I. The ship holds a genuinely notable place in airship history: it was Captain Ernst Lehmann\'s first command, the pilot who trained aboard Sachsen under Hugo Eckener and went on to captain the Graf Zeppelin and, later, the Hindenburg, and it also served as the training ship for Peter Strasser, who went on to lead the Imperial German Navy\'s airship division through the war. When the Army requisitioned Sachsen in August 1914, Lehmann stayed on as its commander before the ship was later fitted for military duty and, in 1916, decommissioned.This is the postcard\'s un-posted example: the reverse is the plain printed \"Postkarte\" address side with no stamp affixed, no postmark, and no message or address written in, so the card has never been through the mail.
