The two principal manuals in this archive were issued in January and May 1944, placing them only months—and, in the case of the SHAEF manual, only weeks—before the Normandy landings.The first is the restricted January 10, 1944 European Theater of Operations, United States Army, Preparation for Overseas Movement: Short Sea Voyage, commonly abbreviated ETO-POM-SSV. It provided instructions for preparing and moving personnel, vehicles, equipment, and supplies across the English Channel during the invasion build-up. The manual addresses the assault, follow-up, build-up, and reinforcement phases of the cross-Channel operation.Also included is the restricted May 1944 Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force Standard Policy and Procedure on Matters of Combined Civil Affairs Operations in North West Europe. Issued immediately before D-Day, it set out Allied civil-affairs procedures for liberated and occupied areas of Northwest Europe. The front cover bears a handwritten ownership notation identifying it as the property of Lt. Col. J. P. The staple-bound pamphlets have varying degrees of soiling and wear around the wrappers and staples.Meteorology for Airmen has substantial rubbing, staining, and discoloration to the boards, wear to the cloth spine, and handwritten ownership marks, calculations, and notes.
