Puthuff was born in Waverly Missouri to an itinerant carpenter named Alonzo Duvall. His mother died when he was two and he was raised by assorted relatives throughout his childhood. When he was 14 his father fully gave up on raising him and he moved in with his mother's old friend Elizabeth Stanley Puthuff, a dressmaker. She became a surrogate mother to him and together they moved to Denver. she encouraged him to pursue his artistic talents and he dropped out of school to pursue a career in commercial art. When they arrived in Denver in 1889 she enrolled him at the University of Denver's Art School. Ultimately he ended up taking her name and she continued to support him throughout his life. After four years of study he went to Chicago to see the World's Fair and to gain a higher quality of education. Mrs. Puthuff arranged employment for him at a decorating company in Peoria, IL which led to an apprenticeship at a mural painting business. Over time grew bored of the work and ended up returning to Denver to try his hand at landscape painting. In need of money, he moved to Los Angeles in 1903 after getting a job at Wilshire Advertising, an early billboard company. While in California he met and fell in love with another commercial artist named May Longstreet. The couple married in 1910 and had five children together. Along with his friends and fellow painters William Wendt (1865 - 1946), Carl Oscar Borg (1879 - 1947), and Franz Bischoff (1864 - 1929) he helped found the Art students League of Los Angeles in his Highland Park studio. He and a handful of other artistic types worked to develop the nascent artist community of Southern California in Highland Park. Others like writer Charles Lummis, stained glass designer William Lees Judson, violinist Elmer Wachtel, and illustrator Maynard Dixon had made Highland Park their home turning it into the art district of LA. Within a decade of his arrival he had become one of Southern California's most respected artists earing a silver medal at the Panama-California exposition, the fair for which San Diego's Balboa Park was built. By the the 1920's he was able to completely retire from commercial painting. He worked through the 30's as a museum diorama painter. When the artistic movement of his youth shifted to Plein-Air works coming from Laguna Beach he joined them and became well respected in those circles as well. However, he unfortunately lived long enough to see the impressionist movement he helped create die along with his contemporaries. After WWII the tastes of galleries became more modernist and by that point he was in his 70's and unable to adjust. He died in 1972 at the age of 96 in Corona Del Mar near Laguna Beach. Today his works are on view throughout Southern California at various institutions including LACMA, the Laguna Art Museum, and the Bowers Museum
The sale record for Puthuff was $96,000 for "Sweeping View of Big Tujunga Canyon" which sold at John Moran saleeers, LA in 2014. At least 50 of his works have sold for more than $10,000, with his paintings being a common presence at Christie's and Bonham's.
