The Temple Shakespeare series was first published by J.M. Dent
& Co. in London during the mid-1890s, edited meticulously by Israel Gollancz. Designed to be pocket-friendly and accessible, each volume presented a single play with high editorial
standards, modern typography, and charming prefatory notes. The little books quickly became an enormous commercial success, finding a permanent home on the bookshelves of
Victorian and Edwardian readers.
Production continued across numerous reprint editions into the 1920s, with various bindings ranging from limp red cloth to sumptuous red paste grain roan leather. The leather-bound issues, featuring gilt spine lettering and ribbon markers, were especially popular as gifts and decorative set pieces. Today,
these miniature volumes remain cherished objects for collectors
of antique literature and fine miniature books.
