Very interesting vintage Sigma Nu fraternity coat-of-arms pendant or watch fob featuring a detailed raised rendition of the fraternity\'s historic crest.
The piece measures approximately 1 3/8 inches tall and weighs 10.5 grams. It has an integral hanging loop at the top, suggesting it was originally intended to be worn or carried as a pendant, charm, or watch fob.
The front features the elaborate Sigma Nu coat of arms, including several of the fraternity\'s recognizable heraldic elements, such as the knight\'s helmet, rose, serpent, crossed swords, shield, and decorative mantling.
Sigma Nu was founded in 1869 at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in Lexington, Virginia. The fraternity\'s coat of arms was designed by Sigma Nu member Ellwood H. McClelland and was officially adopted by the fraternity in 1915, giving this style of insignia more than a century of history.
The reverse is plain and unmarked. I do not see a manufacturer\'s name, gold or sterling mark, or other hallmark. Metal composition is unknown and has not been tested. It has an attractive aged gold/brass/bronze-tone appearance with patina and surface wear consistent with age.
I have not been able to locate another identical example, making this an especially interesting piece of vintage Sigma Nu, Greek-letter, fraternity, VMI, or fraternal memorabilia.
