Achille-Emile Othon Friesz (1879-1949) is a well listed French artist who is primarily considered a Fauvist. The artist was a descendant of a long line of ship builders and sea captains. He went to school in his native city of Le Havre. While studying at the Lycee, he met his lifelong friend Raoul Dufy with whom he studied at the Le Havre School of Fine Arts. Friesz and Dufy went on to Paris where they met Henri Matisse, Albert Marquet and Georges Rouault. Like them, Friesz became a member of the Fauvist movement known for its lively arabesques and brilliant colors. In his later life, his works showed a more somber palette and showed the influence of Cezanne\'s logical composition and simple tonality as well as a faint baroque flavor which adds vigor to his landscapes and still lifes.
The artwork for sale is an original, vintage oil painting on a sheet of canvas. The image depicts a beautiful landscape showing the road between a stone wall with foliage and colorful village homes. The road leads to the water\'s edge with green hills in the distance and a cloudy blue sky above. The painting is signed at the lower right \"E. Othon Friesz\". The painting measures 10.35\" high and 14.11\" wide. Date is unknown but it appears to be from the 1940\'s. There is no paperwork to provide provenance so this little gem of a painting is being sold as \"Attributed to Emile Othon Friesz\".
