Vintage L.S. Starrett No. 603 precision machinist’s steel rule, manufactured in Athol, Massachusetts, USA.
This specialized Starrett rule is divided into six different graduation scales: 8, 16, 24, 32, 40 and 48 divisions per inch. Unlike an ordinary household ruler, these multiple scales allowed machinists, toolmakers, patternmakers and engineers to select the degree of precision needed for a particular layout, measurement or inspection task. The less-common 24ths, 40ths and 48ths scales made this a particularly versatile working instrument for specialized shop calculations and close mechanical work.
The L.S. Starrett Company was founded in Athol, Massachusetts, in 1880 and became one of America’s most respected manufacturers of precision measuring instruments.
