Amusing old carved wood \"Tonkotsu\" tobacco box kimono accessory. Traditionally it is used to hang from a Japanese obi sash to hold tobacco or sometimes medicines or seals. This tonkotsu box is in the form of \"Daruma\" (for perservence and good luck), carved in the form of a mokugyo or temple bell, with a grotesque expression on his round face. His hands function as cord holders, pulling his own face into place. This box issometimes part of a kit known as \"inro\" that would also include a tobacco pipe holder and a netsuke figure hung from the same cord.The wood box is in very good condition, just over 4\" tall and 2-3/4\" wide. It appears that an oval hole had been carved into the base, which is now filled in with a different piece of thin wood.
