Vintage Japanese Shino-Style Art Pottery Vase – Signed – Circa 1970s
Beautiful vintage Japanese art pottery vase featuring a distinctiveShino-style textured glazewith thick creamy white glazing, gray-blue accents and abstract iron/rust-colored brushwork.
The surface has wonderful character, including the intentionally textured, pinholed and speckled appearance associated with this style of glazing. The gray-blue glazed neck and base provide a striking contrast against the warm white body and abstract decoration.
The underside features ahand-painted Japanese calligraphic maker's mark beneath the glaze. An original gold foil label reading“ORIENTAL ORIGINAL – CELLINI”also remains attached to the base.
Research has located a closely comparable Japanese Shino-style vase attributed to theKikyoya kiln and Kosaburo, circa 1970, displaying very similar glaze treatment, coloration, construction and underside marking style. Because the painted signature on this vase has not been conclusively translated or matched,this piece is not being represented as a confirmed Kosaburo work. The comparison is noted only as useful context for its apparent period and Japanese pottery style.
The vase has an exposed terracotta foot ring with a recessed glazed base and hand-painted marking, further highlighting its handcrafted character.
Condition:Very good vintage condition with minor signs of normal age and handling. No major chips or cracks observed. The numerous small pinholes, speckles, glaze pooling and surface irregularities are characteristic of the decorative glaze and production process and should not be mistaken for damage.
