Up for sale is this beautiful loose vintage Hot Wheels Redline Custom Volkswagen in a deep, rich aqua color. This is one of the early Hot Wheels redline castings, based on the classic Volkswagen Beetle but customized in true late-1960s Hot Wheels fashion with an exposed engine, raised stance, redline wheels, and opening sunroof. Mattel’s Custom Volkswagen was part of the original 1968-era lineup, and it remains one of the most recognizable and collectible early Redlines. The casting was produced in both U.S. and Hong Kong versions, and the model line ran from 1968–1970.
CONDITIONBeautiful vintage Custom Volkswagen in a vibrant aqua/teal Spectraflame-style finish with strong color, shine and excellent overall eye appeal. The body retains very nice paint coverage, particularly along the sides, roof and rear. There is some age-related toning/mottling and unevenness in the finish, along with scattered small paint chips/pops and light edge wear, most noticeable around the fenders, window/roof edges and a few raised body areas. The front headlight areas show some finish wear. The exposed engine and side exhaust are intact with normal age-related dulling/tarnish. Windows show light scratching/haze consistent with age, and the light-colored interior remains visible. All four Redline wheels are present with bright wheel centers and strong red rings. Overall, a very attractive vintage example with beautiful color that displays extremely well while showing honest signs of age. This Custom Volkswagen comes from a very special family collection that has been stored for decades.
Our grandfather purchased these Hot Wheels directly from Mattel, something he was able to do because several members of our family worked there at the time. These cars have remained part of our family collection for many years, and we are now slowly liquidating them.
They are much more than old toys to us — they represent a unique part of our family history. We truly appreciate how important these early Redlines have become to collectors, and we hope each one finds a new home where it will be valued, preserved and enjoyed for years to come.
