Up for sale is this beautiful loose vintage Hot Wheels Redline Custom Volkswagen in a deep, rich aqua color. This is one of the early Hot Wheels redline castings, based on the classic Volkswagen Beetle but customized in true late-1960s Hot Wheels fashion with an exposed engine, raised stance, redline wheels, and opening sunroof. Mattel’s Custom Volkswagen was part of the original 1968-era lineup, and it remains one of the most recognizable and collectible early Redlines. The casting was produced in both U.S. and Hong Kong versions, and the model line ran from 1968–1970.
CONDITIONVery nice original vintage loose condition with beautiful, rich Spectraflame Aqua color that still retains strong shine. There is age-related toning/darkening and some unevenness in the finish, along with scattered small paint chips, nicks and light surface wear, particularly around edges, window openings and raised areas. The exposed engine and side exhaust show normal age-related oxidation/toning. Clear windows show light surface wear, and the white interior remains intact. Original Redline wheels show expected vintage wear but present nicely. Overall, a very attractive survivor with plenty of color and character. Please carefully review all close-up photos, as they are an important part of the condition description.A Little History From Our Family
This Custom Volkswagen comes from a very special family collection that has been stored for decades.
Our grandfather purchased these Hot Wheels directly from Mattel, something he was able to do because several members of our family worked there at the time. These cars have remained part of our family collection for many years, and we are now slowly liquidating them.
They are much more than old toys to us — they represent a unique part of our family history. We truly appreciate how important these early Redlines have become to collectors, and we hope each one finds a new home where it will be valued, preserved and enjoyed for years to come.
