Vintage high-quality jacquard wall tapestry known as "The Woodpecker" (or Woodpecker with Verse), a famous design by William Morris. This specific piece is a modern reproduction woven in France.
Designed entirely by William Morris in 1885.
The original was woven at Merton Abbey in England and is now housed at the William Morris Gallery in London.
Inspired by Ovid's Metamorphoses, it depicts the legend of Picus, an ancient Italian king transformed into a woodpecker by the sorceress Circe.
The Gothic script at the top and bottom features a verse composed by Morris:"I once a King and chief now am the tree-bark’s thief:ever ‘twixt trunk and leaf chasing the prey.
