Vintage Alpaca Mexico abalone shell inlay dangle earrings — kite-shaped silver-tone drops with rays of iridescent abalone and black inlay.
Classic Mexican artisan earrings of the type made in Taxco and sold through the 1970s and 1980s. Each kite (elongated diamond) shaped drop has an open teardrop cut-out at the top and a fan of inlaid rays below: shimmering abalone shell in greens, blues and pinks alternating with black. The inlay is set flush in a silver-tone alpaca frame.
Construction: French hook ear wires for pierced ears; the drops are stamped on the back.
MARK: ALPACA MEXICO stamped on the back of each drop. Alpaca (nickel silver) is a silver-colored alloy, not sterling silver.
MEASUREMENTS: each earring approximately 2 1/4 inches long including the ear wire; the drop itself is about 1 5/8 inches long by 3/4 inch wide. Weight 7.31 grams for the pair.
MATERIALS: alpaca (nickel silver alloy) with genuine abalone shell and black resin inlay. Not sterling silver; contains nickel.
CONDITION: pre-owned, good vintage condition. The inlay is complete with no missing pieces; the alpaca shows light surface scratches and a soft patina on the backs, as is typical. Ear wires are intact. Please see photos.
