Vintage Detroit Michigan Site Proposal 1964 Summer Olympic Games Original Copy For Sale

• Proposal is 9 1/4" by 11 3/4", complete with 4 inside pages and in excellent condition
• Rare, obtained years ago from an estate of a family member that worked on this Detroit Committee
• This is not the original proposal but a copy that had few copies distributed, mostly to working members on the committee and dignitaries

• As the USOC prepared to select an American nominee, Detroit mayorLouis Mirianiappointed an Olympic Games Authority board in July 1958, beginning the city's formal campaign to host the 1964 Games.[52]Chicago, Los Angeles, and Minneapolis were the other cities that presented to the USOC at its Chicago meeting on September 6, 1958. Detroit was chosen, in part because the city already had good relations with the IOC and because it had improved its facilities since 1955.[53]

In the meantime, the IOC had created new rules for candidate cities, requiring each buyer to have the endorsement of itsNational Olympic Committeeas well as its national government (thereby further ensuring that only one city from any country could offer at one time). Accordingly, theU.S. Congresspassed ajoint resolutionin March 1959 which invited the IOC to host the 1964 Olympics in Detroit.[54]

The host city for the 1964 Summer Olympics was selected at the55th IOC SessioninMunich,West Germany, on May 26, 1959. The other candidates offerding were Brussels, Tokyo, andVienna.[11]Because Tokyo had been awarded the 1940 Summer Olympics and was forced to relinquish hosting duties by the outbreak of World War II, then needed to recover from the devastation of the war before it could consider offerding again,[55]it was considered the front-runner in its 1964 offer.[56]However, Detroit's candidacy reportedly had the support of theSoviet Olympic Committee, which wanted to see Communist athletes succeed in the heart of the United States.Ultimately, Tokyo received the majority of the vote on the first ballot and was immediately awarded the Games. Detroit came in second place with 10 votes, while Vienna, which had been considered a distant third-place contender, received nine.
