Substantial vintage solid-copper intaglio/etching matrix measuring approximately 12 × 16 inches and weighing about 3 pounds. The incised composition appears to interpret Ezekiel’s vision of the four living creatures: clustered human, lion, ox and probable eagle faces, a winged body, human hands and wheel-like circular forms.
A second partially developed skeletal or winged figure suggests that the plate was abandoned in an early working state rather than completed for a final edition. The reverse retains a dark, worn coating consistent with the acid-resistant backstop used during copper-plate etching.
Unattributed; no signature has been located. Estimated mid-to-late 20th century, possibly 1960s–80s. Surface oxidation, verdigris, scratches and old working residue are present. Sold as found and uncleaned. An unusual original printmaking artifact with biblical, visionary and surrealist imagery.
