Matching pair of vintage Chinese hand-painted fisherman and bamboo paintings on woven silk/textile.
These companion works were designed to display together. Each depicts a fisherman in a traditional boat surrounded by bamboo, water and birds. When positioned side by side, the bamboo frames the outside edges while the boats and fishermen face inward toward one another.
Both paintings carry the same vertical seven-character Chinese inscription:
Guìlín shānshuǐ jiǎ tiānxià
Commonly translated as:
The phrase is a historic expression praising the famous landscape of Guilin, Guangxi, China, and is associated with a Southern Song inscription dating to 1201.
Each painting also bears a red seal/chop. The seal and artist have not been conclusively identified, so no specific artist attribution is being made.
