Vintage Chinese-Style Hand-Carved Soapstone Lotus Leaf Brush Washer / Scholar Dish
Beautiful and unusual hand-carved stone piece designed in the form of a curled lotus leaf with detailed floral, leaf, bud and seed-pod decoration.
The interior features an incised floral design, while the raised and folded edges give the piece an attractive sculptural appearance. The underside is also extensively carved with additional leaf, stem and geometric detailing, making this an interesting piece from every angle.
Pieces of this form are traditionally known as scholar's brush washers, originally designed to hold water for rinsing calligraphy or painting brushes. It can also be displayed today as an Asian decorative collectible, trinket dish or small catchall.
