Vintage Burmese Kalaga Beaded Tapestry – Indra/Sakka Riding White Elephant – Hindu Buddhist Mythology

Striking vintageBurmese Kalaga tapestry, richly hand-embroidered with intricate beadwork, sequins, metallic thread and dimensional raised detailing. Traditionally associated with Myanmar (Burma), Kalaga textiles are created using the elaborateshwe gyi doembroidery technique and are prized for their exceptionally detailed handwork.

The central scene depicts acrowned celestial or royal figure riding an elaborately adorned white elephant. The imagery is strongly associated with Southeast Asian Buddhist and Hindu mythology and is believed to representIndra (Sakka/Śakra), king of the gods, whose divine elephant mount isAiravata. In Southeast Asian Buddhist artistic traditions, Indra may be depicted riding a single-headed white elephant rather than the multi-headed Airavata seen in some Hindu iconography.

The craftsmanship is exceptional, with extensive hand-applied beads and sequins, metallic embroidery, layered textiles and raised embellishment creating a highly dimensional surface. Hand stitching is clearly visible on the reverse.

Condition:The display side remains vibrant and presents beautifully, with no apparent missing beads or sequins. There is one small hole in the backing fabric on the reverse, which is not visible when displayed. It displays the hand knotting beneath. Please review photographs for complete condition details.
