A fascinating old handmade Appalachian mountain banjo with a distinctive traditional construction.
This instrument features a hand carved wooden neck, fretless fingerboard, and short fifth string.
The wooden body is assembled with flat head screws and features a circular opening in the back with a wooden resonator ring seen inside.
The banjo has an older drumhead type material which has a repair apparently made many years ago with tape. It shows considerable age, wear and character consistent with an old folk instrument that was made to be played.
One of the most interesting aspects of this banjo is its striking resemblance to the traditional Appalachian mountain banjos documented in the 1975 book Foxfire 3.
