A genuinely rare and highly desirable piece of Italian cycling history.
This beautiful vintage steel road bicycle was built by Dino Zanella of Pordenone, Italy, most likely in the very early 1980s. Zanella was a highly respected master frame builder who worked at Colnago during the 1970s, where he became regarded as one of the most talented frame builders of his generation. During the 1980s, he established his own workshop in Pordenone, producing high-quality, made-to-order bicycles.
Zanella-built frames are very rare today, and examples of this quality and specification don\'t often appear on the market as they are considered museum/showroom pieces.
The frame is a large 59 cm size and features extensive original Dino Zanella pantographing throughout.
The level of detailing includes:
Zanella name and detailing on the fork
Extensive pantographing on the rear stays
Dino Zanella signature pantographed onto the top tube
Zanella pantographing on the seat tube
Original Zanella detailing on the headset
Zanella name and logo pantographed into the stem
Custom-made, pantographed chainrings bearing the Zanella name
The extensive custom work strongly suggests that this was not an ordinary catalogue bicycle. It was most likely a bespoke build or custom order, possibly produced for display or for an important figure within the Italian cycling industry. Zanella was known for producing frames to order for prominent figures such as Ernesto Colnago.
The bicycle is equipped with a Campagnolo Super Record groupset, with the exception of the Modolo Flash brake calipers which are original. The bike also features internal cable routing through the top tube and also along the downtube from the friction shifters, another rare feature generally reserved for high-end bicycles of the Super Record drivetrain, hubs, brake levers, shifters
Campagnolo Super Record rear derailleur
Custom Zanella-pantographed chainrings
Internal cable routing throughout
Modolo Flash brakes
Cinelli handlebars
3TTT stem with original Zanella pantographing
Ambrosio Excellence rims
Michelin Dynamic Classic tyres
Original 1980s Rolls saddle
Original Regina chain
The bicycle has been fully restored by myself with attention to period-correct details. The aim was to preserve the character and authenticity of the original bike as much as possible.
Bikes from Dino Zanella\'s workshop are extremely uncommon on today\'s market. It is now ready to ride and, being pre-1987, is also Eroica ready, making it suitable for submission for Eroica certification and participation in Eroica events.
