Vintage 1940s Wittnauer 17J Tank Watch 10K Gold Filled Hooded Lugs Revue 73 Runs For Sale

This is a classic late-1940s Wittnauer dress watch in a rectangular tank case. The 10K gold-filled case has dramatic hooded, flared lugs and fluted detailing at the top and bottom of the bezel, which is typical of the period.

Dial and hands: The silver-cream dial has applied gold Arabic numerals at 12, 3 and 9, applied baton markers, and a recessed square small-seconds register at 6. It's signed WITTNAUER. It has even aging with light spotting and freckling across the surface, and some wear on a few markers (see the 3 and 5 o'clock). The gold leaf hands match the markers.

Movement: It has a Swiss 17-jewel manual-wind movement signed "Wittnauer Watch Co. Inc.", marked "Unadjusted" and "Swiss", with the Revue 73 caliber stamp and the AXA import code. It runs, but it would benefit from a service. Photos show some residue on the ratchet wheel and green oxidation on the stem. It's being sold as a running watch with no guarantee of timekeeping.

Case: The inside of the caseback is signed "Wittnauer New York Geneva Montreal, L&K, 10K Gold Filled Bezel, Steel Back", with case number 1465 and old watchmaker service marks. The outside of the back is stamped "10K GF Bezel Steel Back L&K". The gold fill has honest wear with some light brassing on the lug edges and sides. The steel back has light scratches. The domed acrylic crystal is clear, with light surface marks. The crown is a gold-tone knurled period style.

Strap: It comes on a tan leather strap with black backing and a gold-tone buckle. The strap is not original and shows wear at the holes and edges.
