Made from an exceptionally light, airy ivory cotton gauze with extensive hand embroidery in vivid red, blue, green, yellow, orange and black. The front is densely decorated with stylized flowers, vines, birds and geometric motifs, with additional embroidery at the shoulders, neckline, sleeves and hem. Finely gathered and smocked around the neckline, sleeve cuffs and waist, with a short softly bloused silhouette and small side snaps.
A particularly lovely early example of a Hungarian embroidered peasant blouse, with far more character and handwork than the later mass-produced folk-style versions. The sheer gauzy cotton, saturated embroidery and relaxed silhouette also give it a wonderful boho / bohemian quality while remaining an authentic period folk garment.
Best fit likely modern size small. The blouse measures approximately 15 inches shoulder to shoulder, 40 inches around the chest, 32 inches around the waist, and 16 1/2 inches from shoulder to hem. Three small snaps at waist.
Very good antique/vintage condition overall with no holes noted. There is some age-related yellowing to the ivory cotton as well as underarm discoloration.
