Vintage Spalding No. 184 “Slingin’ Sam Baugh” signature-model leather football, dating to approximately the late 1930s-1940s.
This is an original period Spalding football endorsed by legendary Washington quarterback and Pro Football Hall of Famer Sammy Baugh. Period Spalding advertising identifies model No. 184 as “The Slingin’ Sam Baugh” and describes it as an official-size football with a selected pebbled-grain leather cover, lock-stitched construction and rubber valve bladder.
The original markings are very faded from age and use, but portions remain visible, including the Spalding logo, No. 184, inflation markings and remnants of the Slingin’ Sam Baugh signature-model graphics.
Wonderful authentic aged appearance with heavily patinated pebbled leather. Football retains a good display shape.
Condition: Well-used antique condition with substantial age and playing wear throughout. Leather shows discoloration, scuffs, scratches, surface wear, dryness and areas of finish loss. Original lacing is worn, frayed and broken/loose in areas. Rubber inflation valve shows age/wear. Printed markings are heavily faded and difficult to read. Please review all photos closely for condition.
Football is being sold as a collectible/display piece. Seems to be inflated, holds its shape well. It has not been tested for inflation and I would not recommend attempting to inflate it due to its age. Has not been cleaned or conditioned.
Approximately 11 inches long as shown in the measurement photo.
A great piece of early professional football history associated with one of the most important quarterbacks of the prewar NFL era.
