History:
E.W. Liberty, born Edward W. Liberty (1883–1957) and widely known as “Dad” Liberty, was a legendary American tattoo artist who dominated the Boston tattoo trade for nearly 50 years. Operating primarily out of Boston\'s iconic Scollay Square, he established a family dynasty that defined early traditional American tattooing in New England. • The Boston Monopoly: Along with his sons, Edward Liberty held a near-monopoly on the Boston tattoo scene from the 1910s until 1962, when Massachusetts officially banned tattooing statewide.
• The Liberty Boys: He trained and worked alongside his three sons—Frank W. Liberty, Ted Liberty, and Harold “Lefty” Liberty. His eldest son, Frank, famously altered his father\'s printing blocks from “E.W. Liberty” to “F.W. Liberty” to create his own business cards.
• Artistic Style & Legacy: He specialized in bold, patriotic, and maritime-themed American Traditional imagery. One of his most famous masterpieces was a massive, highly detailed visual narrative featuring the Madonna and Child with 37 angels across the back of an ex-Navy seaman.
• Historical Exhibits: His flash sheets, original tools, and historical impact were showcased by Historic New England in a retrospective exhibition titled “Loud, Naked, & in Three Colors: The Liberty Boys & The History of Tattooing in Boston”.
