Overall Very Good. Complete and uniformly bound in five volumes, with sound, firm bindings and crisp, clean pages. The burgundy cloth boards show light rubbing, scattered surface marks, and modest wear to the extremities, while the elaborate gilt spine decoration remains attractive. Four volumes have prior ownership markings to the front endpapers; Volume II instead has a bookplate. Volume I contains a few faint pencil-underlined sentences interspersed throughout the text. Volumes II–V are otherwise unmarked beyond their front endpapers. Top edges gilt, with some age-related dulling.
A handsome 1900 five-volume illustrated edition in matching burgundy cloth, with gilt-stamped fleur-de-lis designs to the spines and Hugo’s facsimile signature in gilt on the front boards. Each volume contains approximately three to five full-page illustrations, including portraits and scenes from the novel. The complete work is divided into its five original parts: Fantine, Cosette, Marius, The Idyll in the Rue Plumet and the Epic in the Rue Saint-Denis, and Jean Valjean.
First published in 1862, Les Misérables follows Jean Valjean through a sweeping account of poverty, justice, mercy, revolution, and redemption in nineteenth-century France. This turn-of-the-century Illustrated Cabinet Edition presents the entire novel across five volumes, retaining its matching decorative publisher’s bindings and illustrated presentation.
