Vanity Fair: A Novel Without a Hero by William Makepeace Thackeray, c. 1910, hardcover edition published by A.L. Burt Company as part of The Home Library. This undated edition presents Thackeray’s classic nineteenth-century novel in burgundy cloth boards with gilt spine lettering and decorative gilt rules. The title page identifies Thackeray as the author of Henry Esmond, The Newcomes, Pendennis, and The Virginians. The volume bears a personal library embossing on the title page reading “Library of Alice Ray” with initials in the center. A separate small ownership stamp is also present on the title page. This is an attractive early twentieth-century A.L. Burt edition of one of Thackeray’s best-known works.
Condition: Burgundy cloth boards show minor rubbing and edge wear, with gilt lettering and decoration remaining clearly visible on the spine. Pages have age toning. Pencil writing and extensive handwritten notes are present on the back endpapers/pages, including references to passages and observations concerning characters. Personal library embossing and a small ownership stamp are present on the title page.
