This listing is for a vintage Claude Lakey alto saxophone mouthpiece. It is a rare \"Symphony Model\".It is stamped \"4*\" on the side, with a smaller \"4\" following that, which does not match the main marking. The numbers are irrelevant though, becauseit has been re-faced/opened.
The tip opening now measures .085\", which is fairly wide for alto. That would be just slightly smaller than a Selmer F, or a Meyer #8. I do not know who did the work, but it plays quite well in my opinion. It is focused, and relatively bright, but not shrill. It looks a little rough at first glance, what with the visible intersecting work marks, but I have learned that this tends to be a sign of a good re-facer, as it is indicative of more detailed adjustments being made. You can also see that whoever worked on this piece took the time to adjust the baffle to compensate for the wider tip opening. So, I suspect that whoever did this knew what they were doing. Never-the-less, you might want to send it to a trusted re-facer of your choosing to have it evaluated and tweaked if deemed necessary.
This mouthpiece is in good used condition. There are no chips, nicks, dings, or gouges to the facing. There are some tooth indentations on the bite plate, which you might want to fill and smooth. There are no cracks or other damage. There is minimal scratching, and the logo/markings are clear. This piece has been cleaned/sanitized.
