U.S. Scott #10A – 8R0 Plate 0 – C Relief – Prominent UR Guide Dot – Blue Troy, N.Y. CDS – 1851 Letter
Very attractive 1851 3¢ Washington folded-letter cover, franked with a Scott #10A, plated as 8R0 – position 8 of the right pane of Plate 0, C relief, with the characteristic prominent upper-right guide dot.
The stamp is an especially attractive on-cover example, showing large margins, strong color and a clear impression. The prominent guide dot at upper right provides an excellent visible plating characteristic for the specialist.
The stamp is tied by a large and attractive blue TROY, N.Y. SEP 25 circular date stamp, providing excellent color contrast against the red stamp and white folded letter.
The original correspondence is retained and is headed:
Troy, Sept. 25th, 1851
making this a same-day postal use during the opening months of the 1851 3¢ issue.
The letter is addressed to:
David S. Kennedy, Esq.
New York
The surviving correspondence is a concise piece of contemporary banking and commercial history. The writer advises Kennedy that he is enclosing a bank draft for $638.80 to retire two acceptances held at Kennedy\'s office.
The two obligations are itemized in the letter:
Acceptance due September 26 – $238.80
Acceptance due September 28 – $400.00
Total – $638.80
The letter therefore preserves an unusually tangible example of the everyday mechanics of mid-19th-century commercial credit and banking, with the precise obligations, maturity dates and remittance amount all recorded.
It closes “Yours very truly” and is signed by the sender.
An additional feature of the original letter is a blind-embossed device in the upper-left corner of the stationery. The embossing is clearly present but is quite faint and has not been positively identified; no attribution is offered.
