The strikingof the 4 medals by the U.S. Mint was authorized by Public Law 94-117 datedOctober 17, 1975. The obverse and reverse designs for the U.S. Armymedal, which commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Army established June14, 1775, were provided by the Institute of Heraldry, U.S. Army. The obversedesign depicts a soldier of the 1770s and one of the modern era. The reversedesign consists of the interior portion of the Department of the Army plaquedesign, based on the Department of the Army seal that has been in continuoususe since the 1770s. The obverse design was executed by Matthew Peloso and thereverse by Philip E. Fowler, both on the engraving staff at the PhiladelphiaMint.
The designsfor the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps medals, in commemoration ofthe 200th anniversary of the Navy on October 13, 1975, were provided by thenoted California artist and sculptor Hal Reed.The sloop ALFRED, flagship of theFirst American Fleet serving in the Continental Navy from 1775 to 1778, isdepicted on the obverse of the Navy medal together with the symbolic Americaneagle alight upon the anchor and the stars and stripes. The reverse shows themodern nuclear Navy, air, surface and submarine configuration, emanating fromthe nucleus of the hydrogen atom. The obverse design was executed by Edgar Z.Steever and the reverse by Matthew Peloso of the Philadelphia Mint.
Thedesign of U.S. Coast Guard Bicentennial medal commemorates the 200-year history ofthe CoastGuard. According to the U.S. Coast Guard Historian’s Office, the militarybranch was established Aug. 4, 1790. The medal’s obverse, according to the U.S.Mint’s narrative, “features the inspiring painting ‘To the Rescue’ by AntonOtto Fischer, depicting a 19th-century Coast Guard rescue boat battling stormyseas to aid a disabled vessel. Lieutenant Commander Fischer painted it while onactive duty in the Coast Guard Reserve. “GUARDIANS OF THE SEA” is inscribed ona flowing banner at the top border, and “200 YEARS OF SERVICE” is inscribedalong the bottom border. The reverse design, supplied by the U.S. Coast Guard,bears the U.S. Coast Guard seal — the shield of the coat of arms of the UnitedStates, the motto “SEMPER PARATUS”, or “always ready,” with UNITED STATES COASTGUARD 1790 superimposed upon two crossed anchors.
