About the Artists:
Emilio (1910–2008) and Senaida (1909–2001) Romero were a legendary husband-and-wife artisan team based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, renowned for reviving and preserving historic Spanish Colonial crafts. Emilio learned tinsmithing during the Great Depression through the Civilian Conservation Corps, while Senaida was a master practitioner of traditional colcha embroidery. Together, they pioneered a signature style by embedding Senaida’s hand-embroidered floral wool panels directly into Emilio’s hand-punched, glass-encased tin frames.
In recognition of their artistic mastery and commitment to traditional heritage, Emilio and Senaida were awarded the NEA National Heritage Fellowship in 1987—the highest honor given by the United States government in folk and traditional arts. Works by the Romeros are held in major museum collections nationwide, including the Smithsonian Institution.
