The first five volumes of Davis\'s papers cover the early days of his career 1808 to 1855 when he was Secretary of War under the Pierce Administration. Any study of Jefferson Davis who was a very complex yet brilliant man, must including a review of his early writings. Davis served in the Mexican war as a colonel of Mississippi troops. Each volume contains photos and many maps. The recipients of his letters include a \"who\'s who\" of American History from General Winfield Scott to a number of presidents to even Brigham Young.
The papers were collated and edited with notes by a team of historians including Haskell M. Monroe, James t. McIntosh, Lynda Lasswell Crist and Mary Seaton Dix and others. The annotations are especially helpful understanding the context of the letter and the recipients.
