The Territory of Neuchatel and Its Horological Heritage is a magnificent collection of essays on the history of watchmaking in the region of Neuchatel, the heart of the renown Swiss watch industry. The book is oversized, nearly 400 pages, and lavishly illustrated with images on nearly every page. It is hard to capture the wealth of information that is presented. The description that follows does so only to a small degree.
The essays are grouped into four sections:
The Beginnings of Horology examines the societal structure of the region and the fragmented early stages of the industry. The contributions of Jean Jacques Henri Berthoud and Daniel JeanRichard are chronicled. Inexpensive watches starting with Georges-federic Roskopf and his proletarian watch up to the development of the Swatch watch is discussed as are other economical and inexpensive watches.
The Triumph of Horology describes a fully functioning industry. The section provides a history of the factories that came and in most caswes went. Essays give attention to the founders, the workers, the processes, even the architecture and how they worked within the industry systems.
The Direction of Horology exaines the trends, such a lobor, exports, outwork, and decentralization through the years. An excellent essay by Nadja Maillard discussed the transformation that took part in cities.
The Renaissance of Horology examines the pressures placed on the industry tby Asian watches and how the industry transformed itself to meet the challenges. Electronic Horology is addressed by Thomas Perret. The museums of the region are also discussed.
