Victorian Staffordshire Country Cottage Pastille Burner England C 1850
Charming antique porcelain cottage-form pastille burner or incense house, elaborately decorated with applied flowers, textured green vines and hand-painted details. The little house features a white porcelain body with pierced windows, a bright red front door, yellow steps and a dramatically shaped pale-yellow roof accented by a central chimney.
The exterior is particularly decorative, with colorful applied blue, pink, orange and yellow flowers climbing across the façade among textured green vines. Fine gold trim follows the contours of the base, adding another decorative element.
The chimney has openings at the top, while the rear of the cottage has a larger opening near the bottom. This configuration strongly suggests that the piece was intended as a pastille/incense burner: a smoldering scented pastille or incense material could be placed inside, with smoke escaping through the chimney.
Hand painted and crafted in Staffordshire, England.
It dates from 1890 to 1920.
Hand painted metallic gold anchor mark on bottom with crossed top. Maybe Chelsea or Derby.
Very good condition. Small nick to underside and a couple missing petals.
