Spotted Eagle's Camp RPPC Lakota Sioux Native American Indian Montana Real Photo
Original real photo postcard captioned in the negative "Spotted Eagle's Camp" with the date 1888 — a documentary Northern Plains scene showing a Lakota (Sioux) chief in a feather bonnet standing before a family group gathered under a lodge/travois shelter, with horses, camp gear and a wagon behind. A photographer's embossed studio blind stamp (a Montana town) appears at lower left.
- In-negative caption "SPOTTED EAGLE'S CAMP" and date 1888
- Chief in feathered headdress with family, horses, travois and camp gear
- Photographer's embossed studio blind stamp, Montana town (partially legible)
- Divided-back real photo stock, unused; light soiling/foxing on back
- Highly collectible frontier / ethnographic Plains Indian subject
This RPPC reproduces one of Miles City photographer L.A. Huffman's most celebrated images — the Tongue River Valley camp of Spotted Eagle, the Sans Arc Lakota chief who led over 180 warriors at the Battle of the Little Bighorn before surrendering and fleeing to Canada with Sitting Bull. Huffman, hired in 1879 as photographer at Fort Keogh, is renowned for documenting the northern Plains peoples during the twilight of the buffalo-hunting era.
