This gripping military history tells the story of the catastrophic July 29, 1967 fire aboard the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal (CV-59) while the ship was operating off Vietnam.
The disaster began when a Zuni rocket accidentally fired across the flight deck and struck an A-4 Skyhawk. Burning jet fuel and exploding ordnance quickly turned the flight deck into a devastating inferno.
The resulting fire and explosions killed 134 sailors and injured many more, making the Forrestal disaster one of the deadliest accidents aboard a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier.
Freeman reconstructed the disaster using extensive research, official U.S. Navy records and eyewitness accounts from survivors, providing a detailed look at both the catastrophe and the extraordinary efforts of the sailors who fought to save their ship and fellow crewmen.
The book also discusses John McCain, who was aboard Forrestal as a Navy aviator and escaped from his A-4 during the fire.
