The painting shows an old Russian town on a winter morning. Snow lies evenly over the ground and the roofs, and in the centre a white church with gold crosses stands above a low wall, flanked by blue and green onion domes and a tall bell tower. A green wooden fence crosses the foreground, with a bare birch on the left and a rowan tree on the right.Behind the fence a dark horse stands harnessed, and two figures wait beside it: a man in a heavy sheepskin coat and a child in a blue coat. The architecture reads as a composite image rather than a documentary view of one particular place.The white and grey of the snow and the flat overcast sky are warmed by the brown of the coat and the red berries of the rowan. Alexander Alexandrovsky (b. 1951) is a Russian painter based in St. Petersburg. He graduated from the Ilya Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in 1989, where he studied under Boris Ugarov and Viktor Reikhet. A member of the Russian Union of Artists since 1996, Alexandrovsky works in landscape, still life, portraiture, and genre painting.
