To bring Petty back and compete with Ford, Plymouth developed the 1970 Plymouth Superbird specifically for NASCAR racing.
The Superbird was based on the Plymouth Road Runner but had major aerodynamic modifications:

* A massive rear wing mounted high above the trunk
