Óscar Gutiérrez (born December 11, 1974 in San Diego, raised between San Diego and Tijuana). Debuted at age 14 in 1989 as Colibrí. In 1991 his uncle, Rey Misterio Sr., passed him the name and the mask in the ring in Tijuana.
He became one of the faces of modern lucha libre: AAA, a short ECW run, then WCW, where he helped define the cruiserweight division with matches against Eddie Guerrero, Dean Malenko, Juventud Guerrera, and Psicosis. He lost the mask at SuperBrawl IX in 1999 (vs. Scott Hall & Kevin Nash). WWE brought him back under the mask in 2002.
Career highlights include multiple cruiserweight titles, World Heavyweight Champion at WrestleMania 22, the 619, and WWE Hall of Fame induction in 2023. Father of Dominik Mysterio. Still one of the most recognizable masked wrestlers in the world.
