Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606–1669) was a Dutch Golden Age master whose revolutionary approach to light and shadow transformed European art. Born in Leiden and trained by Jacob van Swanenburgh and Pieter Lastman, Rembrandt settled in Amsterdam where he achieved remarkable success as a portraitist and innovator. His dramatic use of chiaroscuro—leaving vast areas in shadow while illuminating focal points—created an unmistakable emotional intensity. Across approximately three hundred paintings, three hundred etchings, and numerous drawings, he demonstrated extraordinary versatility, painting portraits, self-portraits, biblical scenes, and historical narratives. Works like The Night Watch, The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp, The Return of the Prodigal Son, The Jewish Bride, and his iconic Self-portraits remain among his greatest achievements. Though financial hardship marked his later years, Rembrandt trained roughly fifty apprentices and maintained a reputation as one of history's most revered artists.
