Description
Rare Original 1910–1911 Continental Tailoring Company Chicago Oversized Dealer / Tailor Sample Book
Offered here is an impressive original Continental Tailoring Company of Chicago “Season 1910–11” oversized presentation/sample book dating to the early 20th century.
Continental Tailoring Company operated a nationwide made-to-measure clothing business through local agents and dealers. Period advertisements document Continental dealers displaying sample books so customers could select fabrics and styles before ordering custom-made garments.
This substantial volume features a handsome red faux-alligator textured cover with gilt/printed Continental Tailoring Company – Chicago emblem and “Season 1910–11” designation.
The interior contains an unusual assortment of period illustrations, advertising artwork, fashion imagery, color lithographic material and other early-1900s printed ephemera. Several pages have exceptionally decorative graphics, including military imagery, children’s illustrations, birds, women’s fashions and domestic scenes.
This is a fascinating survivor from the golden age of American mail-order and traveling/dealer tailoring and would make an outstanding addition to a collection of:
• Antique tailoring and textile material
• Early Chicago advertising
• Fashion history
• Trade catalogs and salesman samples
• Lithography and commercial illustration
• Early 20th-century ephemera
Condition: Antique and well over 100 years old. The cover shows rubbing, edge/corner wear and age-related deterioration. Interior pages show varying degrees of wear including tears, creases, edge losses, toning, looseness and previous mounting/pasting of printed material. Please review all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
Dimensions: Approximately 36” × 30” if that measurement is accurate — I would put the exact measured dimensions in the listing.
Sold as an original antique item in as-found condition. No restoration has been attempted.
Please examine photographs carefully for contents, completeness and condition.
