Scarce original late-19th-century Hulbert Bas-Relief photographic portrait, an unusual three-dimensional photographic process sometimes referred to as a sculptograph. The photograph depicts an unidentified young gentleman in formal attire. Unlike an ordinary flat cabinet photograph, portions of the portrait have been intentionally formed into physical relief, creating a dimensional appearance that is particularly visible when viewed from an angle. The original mount is marked:“Hulbert Bas-Relief — Patented August 31, 1897.”The front bears the Genelli studio imprint and 928 Olive St., St. Louis, Mo.The dimensional surface is an intentional feature of the original photographic process and is not bubbling or warping. This would make an excellent addition to a collection of early photography, unusual photographic processes, Victorian photography, St. Louis history or photographic ephemera.Original antique item, not a reproduction.Condition shows age-related wear, including areas of image/surface loss, edge and corner wear, discoloration and mount wear. Please examine all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
