Rare 1860s Antique Family Bible Ornate Filigree Leather Illustrated Civil War LGLarge Beautiful Full Leather Bound Family Bible published by J.B. Lippincott of Philadelphia and printed by T.K. and P.K. Collins of Philadelphia between 1859 and 1863. This is the most likely range for the printing of this Bible, though a few years earlier is possible (but not later). Collins was most active in printing Bibles for J.B. Lippincott between 1859 to 1871. J.M. Butler (a very prominent American engraver who landed the contracts for some major important government engraving projects) produced the engravings for this Bible. He joined Joseph Carpenter in 1863 and the name of his firm then took the name Butler & Carpenter.Tooled Leather with intricate ornate gilt filigree. Gold page edging on all three edges. Measures about 12" x 10" x 2 7/16" thick.Some beautiful period engravings throughout produced by J.M. Butler's of Philadelphia.The Bible contains "A Concordance, The Psalms of David in Metre [at the back], An Index, Tables, and Other Useful Matters"--including center cross-references.GOOD+ CONDITION: Really amazing condition for a family Bible of this period. The leather cover shows moderate wear but nothing serious. The intricate gilt that covers the leather is in very nice condition with only a few small spots of damage. The endpaper is split where it covers the front inside hinge, but the hinge itself is still solid and the binding is tight. The pages themselves are generally in excellent condition. There is one creased text page (shown in photo), a page that was not cut correctly at the printers on the lower corner (also shown in its own photo), a couple of small edge tears, and pages immediately next to the engravings have some brown oxidation staining. Also there is creasing on the blank endpapers inside the front and back covers and some minor wear to the gilt/gold page edging. And there is a brief dedication written in the front in period hand (see photos). Otherwise the pages are all clean and unmarked. Please see all photos.The leather can be greatly improved with the proper treatment. I generally do this; but with a book of this value, you may want to have this done by a professional book restorer with more experience than I have--so I have left that to you.❤️ THANKS for checking out our items!
