Kawakami wore this uniform era during his final five seasons with Chunichi from 2004 through 2008, a particularly successful period of his NPB career. In 2004 he won both the Central League MVP and Sawamura Award after helping Chunichi win the Central League pennant. He went 17-7 with a 3.32 ERA that season, then followed with another 17-win campaign and a 2.51 ERA in 2006. In 2007, Chunichi captured the Japan Series championship, their first Japanese championship since 1954, and Kawakami remained one of the club\'s principal starting pitchers. His final Chunichi season in 2008 was also excellent, with a career-best 2.30 ERA. After the 2008 season, he signed with the Atlanta Braves and made his Major League debut in 2009, spending two seasons in MLB before returning to Chunichi in 2012.
