Here is a fantastic and certainly rare award medal made of bronze, in quite splendid condition overall, measuring app. 3\" across, with a plain edge about 1/4\" thick, and it weighs a solid 6.6 ounces.This beautiful education-related medal shows just minimal wear, and I have not done anything to alter or enhance its appearance, with five of the photos having been \"enhanced\" for clarity. Some tiny imperfections are barely noticed, and the obverse rim may look a little odd, but it\'s as made - there are no edge flaws to speak of.This medal is a curiosity of my collection - I cannot find out hardly anything regarding it.
Brandeis University in Waltham Massachusetts was founded and sponsored by the American Jewish community as a nonsectarian research institution named after United States Supreme Court Chief Justice Louis D. Brandeis. Built in 1948, it began awarding this medal to some famous people beginning in 1956, and I am guessing this medal dates to just about that time. I cannot determine the artist who designed the amazing obverse, but the initials seem to indicate a possible CPJ monogram - is it possible this could be from the mind of Carl Paul Jennewein? It doesn\'t look like his style to me, but ...
The obverse features a wonderful scene of a winger centaur playing a lyre while being accompanied by a naked child blowing a horn at the right, a nude woman with wide hands reclining in a niche above. The artist\'s monogram is between the creature\'s legs near the bottom.
The reverse features a decorative shield at the top, with \"Brandeis University - Creative Arts Award\" beneath, a snake-like border of twisted branches around. Fabulous. $400.
