Up for sale is an exceptionally rare original 1967 Don Shy #25 Pittsburgh Steelers game-worn and game-used jersey from the franchise’s famous 1966–1967 “Batman” uniform era.

This jersey is accompanied by a Pittsburgh Steelers Certificate of Authenticity (COA), establishing its provenance as a Don Shy game-used jersey. Also included is a rare vintage 8 x 10 photograph showing Shy wearing the jersey, creating an outstanding display pairing and an important visual connection between the player and the artifact.

The Steelers’ short-lived “Batman” uniform is among the most recognizable and difficult-to-find designs in franchise history. Introduced in 1966 and retained for the 1967 season, the design replaced the team’s traditional shoulder stripes with a large gold triangular shoulder panel. The shape was intended to represent Pittsburgh’s Golden Triangle, but its dramatic appearance quickly led players and fans to compare it with the costume worn by Batman in the popular 1960s television series.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Shy attended Ganesha High School in Pomona, California, before competing at Mount San Antonio College and San Diego State University. At 6 feet 1 inch and approximately 210 pounds, he combined the size of a power runner with the speed and athletic ability of an elite hurdler.

Shy was one of the leading hurdlers in the world during the mid-1960s. He was ranked second in the United States in the 110-meter hurdles for 1966, behind future Olympic champion Willie Davenport. His success in track demonstrated the unusual combination of acceleration, speed, coordination, and power that later made him an effective professional running back and return specialist.

The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Shy in the second round of the 1967 National Football League (NFL) Draft with the 35th overall selection. He immediately became an important member of the Pittsburgh offense.

During his 1967 rookie season, Shy appeared in all 14 games and started seven. He led the Steelers with 99 rushing attempts for 341 yards and scored four rushing touchdowns. He also caught 12 passes for 152 yards and one touchdown, giving him five offensive touchdowns during his first professional season.

Shy produced one of the finest performances of his career on October 29, 1967, when he rushed for 108 yards in Pittsburgh’s 14–10 victory over the New Orleans Saints. On December 3, 1967, he scored two rushing touchdowns in the Steelers’ 24–14 victory over the Detroit Lions.

In addition to his offensive responsibilities, Shy served as one of Pittsburgh’s primary kickoff returners. During the 1967 season, he returned 21 kickoffs for 473 yards. The following year, he recorded 682 kickoff-return yards for Pittsburgh, including an 80-yard return.

Shy played for the Steelers during the 1967 and 1968 seasons before continuing his NFL career with the New Orleans Saints, Chicago Bears, and St. Louis Cardinals. He later played for the Southern California Sun of the World Football League (WFL).

Across seven NFL seasons, Shy recorded 1,577 rushing yards, 835 receiving yards, 76 receptions, and 14 total touchdowns. He also accumulated more than 2,000 kickoff-return yards. His combination of professional football production and elite track accomplishments makes him one of the more distinctive athletes to wear a Steelers uniform during the 1960s.
