An antique Caucasian Shirvan area rug, measuring approximately six feet four inches by three feet eleven inches, hand-knotted with hand-spun, natural dyed wool yarns on a traditional wool warp and weft foundation. The striking composition features a deep indigo-black central field containing a prominent, elongated niche or prayer-arch configuration densely populated with multiple rows of repeating geometric boteh and serrated diamond medallions. The surrounding field is richly decorated with multi-colored geometric filler elements, including stylized rosettes and smaller tribal motifs. This central pattern is enclosed by a series of intricately woven geometric borders, featuring a main cream-ground border displaying a continuous geometric bird or leaf variant sequence, and flanked by minor guarding bands with reciprocal sawtooth and latch-hook patterns.
