Andrew Plimer (1763-1837). English. An oval portrait miniature of an elegant young woman. The pose and the gaze are typical of Andrew Plimer’s style. The sitter is clad in a white frilly frock and has powdered curly hair worn in the late 18th c. manner. The miniature is set in a watch-fob pendant frame with glazed hair on the reverse.Andrew Plimer settled in London in about 1781 where he took up work as a manservant to Richard Cosway who later trained him in portrait painting. Plimer specialized in portrait miniatures. His work was exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1768 to 1810 and in 1819. His brother Nathaniel also became a pupil of Cosway and a painter of miniatures. His work may be seen in many important collections including the V&A.
