“Pictorial History of the War for the Union” by Mrs. Ann S. Stephen, published in New York by Benjamin Hitchcock as a subscription in 1866 and 1867. This is a complete two volume set. Used condition, though it is amazing these still exist at all: There are no dustjackets. Embossed hardcover boards show significant scuffing, fading and soiling from use. Volume 1’s spine covering has come off but is included (see images). Volume 2’s spine is intact. Most edges show scuffing and loss of material. Volume 1’s front cover is pulling away from the binding, and is slightly warped on the top corner. Extensive gilt decorations on the spines are bright and clear (though Volume 1’s is ragged and coming apart), and the gilt decorations on the front covers are bright as well. Corners are badly scuffed but remarkably straight. Pastedowns are foxed, faded and soiled in spots but are intact. Volume 1’s hinges are torn a bit, Volume 2’s hinges are intact. Bindings are a bit loose but are intact. However, Volume 1’s pages 195-206 has pulled away from the binding. Pages are significantly foxed and are soiled in some spots. Text is clean, as are the copious maps and illustrations. Also included are several pressed leaves found inside (see images). Decorative page ends are soiled and darkened. 8vo, 496-566 pages plus indices. Please carefully review the images attached and don’t hesitate to ask any questions.
